Strategic Opportunity The current downturn in the global economy notwithstanding, the Indian film industry is still predicted to grow 10%-15% in the next several years. In 2007 the Indian box office grew by 12% to $1.6 billion due to such factors as multiplex expansion; an expanding middle-class consumer entertainment base which is likely to outrun a global recession; and continued penetration of broadband and wireless networks. Though predictions for 2008 and 2009 have been tempered due the economic crisis, large investments by Indian conglomerates such as Reliance ADA in the Indian entertainment sector supports an overall growth scenario. In addition and, perhaps, most importantly, major U.S. studios, including Warner Bros., Disney, Sony, Fox and Lionsgate, have initiated activities in both content creation and delivery infrastructure which will allow them to establish a foothold in the Indian entertainment industry. The reason for this is clear. The current market saturation in the US as well as the dramatic decline in DVD sales over the past five years has rendered it absolutely imperative for US studios to find new markets to sustain growth. (The Indian film market has remained stubbornly impervious to Hollywood’s standard franchise products which collectively constitute only 8% of the Indian market.) As a result, US studios are in the process of developing content which specifically targets Indian audiences. Recent examples include Warner Bros.’ release of Saas Bahu aur Sensex in September 2008 and Disney’s production and release of Roadside Romeo in October 2008.
